October 18, 2004
Very quiet weekend. Basically worked and watched TV (mostly at the same time). Good thing there's a
lot of other stuff to discuss.
BASEBALL 2004
The main reason I thought that the Yankees would end up losing to the Red Sox was that the Sox had
the edge in starting pitching. Nobody on the Yankees staff scares me. Mike Mussina's very inconsistent,
so is Jon Lieber. Kevin Brown and El Duque are old and can't stay healthy and Javier Vasquez has no
guts (as I predicted he would not).
Yet here they are one win away from once again taking out the Red Sox and going to the World
Series. The starting pitching has been good enough and the bullpen has been lights out. The offense of
course has been awesome, especially Hideki Matsui. I was hoping that Saturday night would be quiet at
work so I could watch the game. By the 5th inning, I was praying for some trouble so I could go out and
report something.
Sunday the Sox came back and forced a game 5 on David Ortiz walk-off homer in the 12th inning. All
that means is that the Yanks have to wait till Monday or Tuesday to advance to the World Series.
NFL 2004
With the all the things going on in the world, war, terrorism, poverty, etc., I rarely ask God to intervene
in sporting events. I'm making an exception next Sunday. I am begging the Good Lord to let the Jets
beat the New England Patriots next week and stop their NFL record winning streak. The fact that the
Patriots own this record shows whats wrong with sports today. The bad guys always win.
One thing's for sure, if the Jets play next week the way they've played the last 3 weeks, they are going
to get their butts handed to them.
THE O'REILLY FACTOR
A former employee of Fox News Channel's leading talk show host Bill O'Reilly filed a $60 Million
lawsuit, saying that he made crude sexual remarks to her. O'Reilly and Fox countersued for extortion.
As many of you know, I'm a big fan of O'Reilly, and not because we both have our paychecks signed
by Rupert Murdoch. Actually truth be told, its not so much his show I like as it is his newspaper column.
On TV he can be a rude obnoxious pr-ck, his column makes alot of sense. We share many of the same
opinions, and not all of them are conservative.
If however he's guilty of what he's being accused of, he should be fired. You can't rail against
gangsta rap and pornography, then turn around like a gangsta treat your employee like she's a ho.
DICK CHENEY'S GAY DAUGHTER
Responding to a question about whether they believe someone can be born homosexual, John Kerry
brought up Mary Cheney, the lesbian daughter of Dick and Lynne Cheney. To me, he was complimentary
to her, basically saying she's obviously comfortable with who she is.
However Cheney and his wife flipped out, and Republicans are all over Kerry for "Dragging family into
the debate" In hindsight, Kerry should have left her out of the discussion. He could have used another
example. I mean for goodness sake, I think its safe to say he has the gay vote locked up. There wasn't
some Hollywood star who's given him tons of money he could have talked about?
But I don't think he meant any harm, I really don't. Bush and Cheney are making a mountain out of a
molehill to try to break this tie in the polls. They're just as guilty as exploiting Mary Cheney as Kerry was.
With all the other stuff going on last week, I forgot to mention the passing of Rodney Dangerfield.
Rodney was not only great in Back to School, Easy Money and Caddyshack, he was one of my favorite
stand-up comics ever. Some say his jokes were all the same motif, but just when you thought he heard
everything he came out with new stuff. Saturday Night Live did a really good skit last week honoring
Rodney: http://snltranscripts.jt.org/04/04bdangerfield.phtml
And we had a birth last week. Congratulations to Gary and Anne-Marie Haley on the birth of their son
Aidan. (10/11)
Have a Great Week
Wild B.
