Hey
Last week I told you guys about Social on 8th and 48th. I worked late again on Saturday night and
against my better judgment I went there again. It's two blocks away from my building and the bartenders
and bouncers know me there by name. When I went there last week, it was so cold that it was practically
empty, but with the temps rising to a relatively balmy 30 degrees, the place was jumping Saturday night.
And something kind of strange happened. I was standing at the bar when a girl came over and stood
right next to me. She was cute, but she was really drunk. She asked me where I was from and then when I
asked her where she was from she said Long Island. When I asked her to be more specific she slurred
out "Nassau County."
5 Years ago (hell 5 weeks ago) I would have been all over this. But I don't know, I just kind of kept to
myself till some guy who was just as drunk as she was got her attention. I must be getting too old for
this.
News Item: The Knicks.
If you had asked Knick fans at this time last week if they'd like to keep Don Chaney as coach, most
people would have said they'd rather have Dick Cheney on the Knicks bench. (Even hard core
Democrats).
But when the Knicks made the long awaited move, they caught hell because of their choice to replace
him, Lenny Wilkens. The argument being that Wilkens at 66, has seen the game pass him by, and that he
is far too laid back for a team that obviously needs a fire lit under its ass. And to a point I agree.
But lets take a closer look here.
Lenny Wilkens is the all time leader in wins. Sure he also has the most losses, but for his career, he is
over .500. Yes, his last championship was in 1979, but that's still 6 years later than the Knicks last title.
We're talking about a Hall of Fame coach here, not some dunce who screwed up at every stop in his
career.
It remains to be seen if he can turn this team around, but with his record and his experience, he
deserves the benefit of the doubt.
TV/Radio News and Views
On Friends, Monica and Chandler just bought a house in Westchester. So a chef and a 1st year
advertising agent go from a Manhattan apartment to a house in Westchester. I wish I lived in their world.
CBS has announced that it will have a CSI New York for the next TV season, joining CSI (set in
Vegas) and CSI Miami. Interestingly, David Caruso is the star of CSI Miami, and I can't help but wonder if
the New York born Caruso would be better off on the New York version than the Miami version
Also, count me amongst the disappointed listeners who found out to their horror that WLIR 92.7 is
now an all Spanish station. What up with that?
News Item: To the Moon?
I think its a great idea that President Bush wants to restart the Lunar Space Program. I never really
understood why it was abandoned in the first place. The only drawback really is the cost. 15 billion for
the moon and Mars. At a time where our economy is still in the toilet, it may not seem like the best use of
resources.
My big question is why is it going to take so long? Bush wants another man on the moon by 2010. I
could see that if we hadn't done this already, but Jeez, if we could do it in 1969, when there was no
Internet, no cell phones and limited satellite TV, why the hell can't we do it right now?
PRESIDENTIAL VOTE 2004
John Kerry was trailing in the polls in Iowa and New Hampshire last week. But now that Weekly Mail
has put him at the top of its wish list for the Democratic nomination, he won the Iowa Caucus and is
closing in on Vermont loudmouth Howard Dean and the General Wesley Clark in New Hampshire.
Friday night, weather permitting, I'm heading up to McLean Avenue with Patti-Ann and Lizzie. Hope to see
all the crew up there!!!
Hope you all enjoyed Martin Luther King Day
Have a Great Week
Wild Bill
