Hey Everybody
I was supposed to work Friday from 10AM-5:30PM, but when the Martha Stewart verdict came down
(See below) I was asked to stay till 9. At 9 I get sent out on a story. I came back to the Post at 11:30 and
I ended up hanging out till 1:30AM. One of the writers kept trying to get me to put down that I worked 14
hours, but I just put in for 12. Saturday I went to the Pig n' Whistle for an after work cocktail or two. That
was the extent of my weekend.
I believe she'll walk. Either her attorneys will come up with a few tricks or the jury will sympathize with her,
either way I don't see her spending any time in jail.
Weekly Mail- February 23, 2004
I was in the newsroom the other day when the Martha Stewart verdict came down. It was a day that I
wanted to be working. It would have been better if they had cameras in the courtroom. As it was the
newsroom waited quietly until those people started coming out waving those scarves, signaling that she
was guilty of the first count. When the last guy came out waving a card with the number 5 on it, we knew
she was guilty on all counts. Meaning my above prediction rang about as true as my fearless sports
predictions.
Still I have a hard time believing she's going to do any hard time. She faces up to 20 yrs, but I'd be
shocked if she got more than 18 months, and she still may win on appeal.
I read a couple of people who suggested that Martha was singled out because she's a woman.
Hogwash. The best advice I ever got from a teacher was my late great eighth grade teacher Mr. Gabrielli.
He told me "Don't ever f-ck with the Feds. The cops, that's one thing, but not the Feds." Martha's in
trouble because she lied to the FBI. Her gender, and the fact that she's a total bee-otch, means nothing.
President Bush: Exploiting 9/11 ?
With the actual Presidential campaign kicking into gear this week, there has been some uproar over
President Bush's use of 9/11 imagery in his campaign spots. Namely, he used a 4 second image of
firefighters carrying a body out of the rubble. From what I've read, it seems like the people who are
doing most of the complaining are people who are looking to get rid of Bush anyway, while those who
are defending him are already supporting him. I know it sounds simple, but I have yet to hear someone
say "well I don't like the commercials, but I think he's done a good job."
I would advise President Bush not to use those images not because I find it offensive, but because I
don't think his post 9/11 record is anything to write home about. I mean, the fact that there have been no
terrorist attacks in the US since 9/11 is a plus, but not capturing Bin-Laden and only now refocusing on
Al-Qaeda after over extending ourselves in Iraq goes down as a minus for Bush in my book. Capturing
Bin-Laden either in 2002 or 2003 may have influenced my vote this November. Capturing him now, will
not.
Rangers Trade Leetch
I can't help it. I'm a hopeless romantic when it comes to sports. I wanted to see Brain Leetch finish his
career as a Ranger. To see him skating around in a Toronto Maple Leafs jersey made me heartsick.
Especially knowing that despite the fact that the team is run by idiots and that they have no chance of
winning, he wanted to stay. It kills me that there are guys on the team I would love to see get traded, but
they won't be because they suck so bad. The one guy I didn't want to see go, was sent packing.
What's worse, I heard that the Rangers didn't even get the Leafs top prospect. The guys they got are
rated pretty high, but the Leafs still have their top blue chip prospects. Also, I have absolutely NO
confidence that Glen Sather, that miserable weasel, will turn any of these draft picks into decent players.
And to think I actually defended that jackoff over the summer. At Karl and Trish's wedding, I was
talking to Uncle Bill (auggie's dad) at the hotel bar. He was bashing Sather and (like an idiot) I said "well
they played fairly well after he started coaching them, maybe that's what they need." Well, what they
need now is for this loser to go back to Edmonton.
Birthday's this week! Since as of Monday, Auggie becomes Constitutionally old enough to run for
President (35) I'm starting a "Draft Auggie for President" campaign. And Kerry is celebrating her birthday
Down Under. If she really wanted to get a taste of Australia without shelling out the big $$$, she could
come to my office and hang out with all the Australians there.
Happy Birthday to 2 of the coolest people in the world.
Everyone Else, have a Great Week
Wild Bill
