The Stanley Cup has been awarded annually since 1915. Before that, it was called the Challenge Cup and like a boxing title was challenged for periodaclly.

The Montreal Canadiens have won the Cup 24 times, the most of any franchise. They have appeared in 33 Stanley Cup Finals. In comparison, the Yankees have won 26 World Series and appeared in 39 of them.
