The All Yankee Team

Now that the Yankees have been eliminated from post season play, one of the first decisions will be what becomes of Bernie Williams. One way or another, his days as a Yankee are probably numbered. If so, it will mark as the end of the career of one of the most loved Yankees in history, not onl;y for his abilities, but the grace in which he carried himself Sadly, this hasn't been the case throughout the history of baseball's most storied franchise. More often, there has been mayhem And every so often (it happened alot after David Wells book came out) someone like Brian Cashman will come out and say This behavior does not represent the true spirit of the Yankees.
This makes me laugh. The Spirit of the Yankees? The Yankees have been filled with degenerates, drunks, and guys with bad attitudes. Give me Joe Torre, Don Mattingly, Derek Jeter and Bernie Williams, and I'll give you , well look for yourself.

C- Jim Leyritz- Fans of the 96 Yankees will remember Leyritz for his dramtic 3 run Homer in game 4 of that year's World Series that capped a 6 run rally. He'll also be remembered for running off at the mouth, and getting himself run out of NY three times, twice by the Yankees as once by the Mets.

Lowlight-Played for 5 teams in three seasons, with two stints each with the Yanks and Padres.

1B- Joe Pepitone- Well known party animal who did time for cocaine possesion back in the mid 80's.

Lowlight- According to his autobiography, as a rookie was out partying with Mickey Mantle after a game in LA against the Angels. When he tried to get the Mick to go back to the hotel was told to "Shut the f-ck up" by number 7.

2B-Chuck Knoblauch- Won Gold Gloves with the Twins then came to the Yankees and forgot how to play second. Once held the ball thinking there was time out while a play was still alive and allowed a run to score, costing the Yanks a playoff game. later in a post game interview said he didn't think he did anything wrong.

Lowlight- Once nailed Keith Olberman's mother with an errant throw as Mrs. Olberman was watching a game from her Yankee Stadium seat.

SS-Dale Berra- While his dad was one of the great Yanks of all time, Dale was not. A so-so fielder who couldn't hit, he was also busted in the 1985 Pittsburgh Drug trial.

Lowlight-It was partly his crappy play that cost his father the job as Yankee manager in 1985 after 16 games.

3B-Wade Boggs- Chicken eating Hall of Famer had was a tremondous hitter, but also a tremendous dickhead. Sat out the last week of the 1986 season to protect his batting average and 10 years later blasted Joe Torre for giving him a day off, in a year where every button Torre pushed came out right. Also tried to become first tampa bay devil ray to get elected to Hall of Fame, despite playing most of his career in NY and Boston.

Lowlight- For all the above mentioned transgressions, the biggest one was having a mistress named Margo Adams, who went on to write a book about the whole affair for his wife and kids to read.

OF-Babe Ruth- I'll let Dennis Leary tell this one-- *"This is Babe Ruth. The Bambino the Sultan of Swat. I smoked 25 g-ddamn black cuban cigars a day, ate meat for breakfast, lunch and dinner, f-cked 18 prostitues a night!

Lowlight--"Of course, I'm dead now. " (Died of cancer at age 53)

OF-Mickey Mantle- There is probably no man more worshipped by other grown men as much as Mickey Mantle. Yet for all the thrills he brought to so many who grew up in the 50's and 60's, he brought heartache to so many more, especially his family and friends. During a recent HBO documentary, there were as many stories of fans he blew off, especially in his post Yankee years. By his own admission he drank his best years away.

Lowlight- According to the movie "61*", was so wound up when he heard Joe Dimaggio was goinhg to be a Yankee Stadium for Old Timers Day, that he drank himself silly the night before, and couldn't play that days game.

OF-Luis Polonia- Was busted for having relations with a 15 year old girl in Milwaukee. When asked if he felt somewhat responsible for not controlling his team, Manager Dallas Green replied. "I didn't tell Luis to f-ck that broad."

Lowlight- 15 will get you 20, or if you're a baseball player, probation.

Util-Chad Curtis- A jump for Jesus nutcase, Curtis was hated on a team (the 99 Yankees) that was as tight knit as any in recent memory. Criticized Derek Jeter for goofing off with then Mariner Alex Rodriguez during a bench clearing brawl between the two teams. He was probably right about that, but in the process alienated himself further from the team.

Lowlight-After hitting the game winning home run Game 3 of the 1999 World Series, told Jim Gray that the Yanks had voted not to talk to him because of the way he badgered Pete Rose during a ceremony before Game 2. David Cone and several other Yankees later said that no such vote had ever taken place.

Mark Whitten-Lowlight- was caught with a prostitute hours before his wife went into labor.
